Umphrey's McGee - Las Tortugas Music Festival

I had originally heard of these folks a few years ago while I was working at a coffee shop, from some younger, almost high schooly girls, so I didn't have much hope for them from the get go. Last night I had the opportunity to see them live for zero dollars, so I was pretty much like Yeah! I'll go. I went. There's this four day music festival here where I work, Las Tortugas, and if I didn't work here, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't pay to get in. I was under the impression that Umphrey's may very well be a jam band, but like I said, it was free. They had some tasty guitar riffs, and lo and behold, the crowd was moving, but I got jammed out. Not even like the cool 'melt your face off' jam, just the 'ehhh I'm bored now' jammed out. The drummer from The Grateful Dead was also there. He also played. I went to bed.

  1. Sorry you couldn't "be" there. I will admit that you either get Umphrey's or you don't and I respect everybody's taste. I'm 50 years old and grew up with Rock but listened to almost nothing but jazz for 20 years until I stumbled on Umphrey's three years ago. I think calling UM a jam band, while technically accurate (since everybody has to own a tag, right?) places a limit on what they really are, which is a talented, energetic and creative group of musicians. I'd encourage you to give them another listen, but the tone of your review made it sound like you had your mind made up before the first note.
